In the 2004 U.S. election, Christian fundamentalists in Georgia toppled Democratic incumbents by offering this coded mantra: “Shorter commutes. More time with family. Lower mortgages.” Which is to say, move out of the city and save your soul. This despite that many exurbs are parasitic on the urban tax base, with its density of people and exchanges, of which they are so condemnatory; and that the “community” exurbs offer is often really the avoidance of conflict and cultural innovation that results from proximity. The city, and as ever the megacity of New York, has come to represent everything the Christian Right believes is evil: same-sex relationships, ready abortions, strong drink and swearing. Not to mention racial diversity, artistic energy and the sense of possibility that we happy members of species homo ludens usually call fun. When an evangelical Christian from Colorado was told that a writer interviewing him lived in New York City, the man stared hard at the writer and just said, “Ka-boom!”
